Hökensås Nature Conservation Area
Hökensås Nature Conservation Area is a prehistoric ridge, 300 meters in height and 100 kilometres long. The terrain of the ridge is steeply hilly with pebble tarns and rounded hills mixed with flat gravely and sandy plains. In the depressions there are bogs, lakes and ponds formed in the ice age.
Naturally beautiful Hökensås with coniferous forest, fine hiking trails and an abundance of berries and mushrooms, attracts mushroom- and berry-pickers as well as people exercising. The area is best known among fishing enthusiasts. With around fifty lakes and ponds, of which thirty are exceptional fishing waters, Hökensås is considered a paradise for fishermen – professionals as well as amateurs.
Hökensås is also well known for its rich animal and bird life – a section of wilderness of great natural value, deep forests and soothing stillness. In addition to birds, you may come across elks, deer, lynx, foxes and hares here.
Fishing Paradise
Hökensås is a paradise for all fishermen – both anglers and amateurs. As about 15% of the Hökensås area is reflective water, you can certainly understand why. Most of the lakes offer fish of all types. Here you can fish from a boat or float tube, or wade out to improve your chances. Just sitting comfortably on the beach behind your rod waiting for a bite also works. The lakes are divided according to three different fishing methods – fly fishing, spin fishing and angling. Since 1957, Hökensås Sportfiske has managed sport fishing tourism in the area and offers fishing principally for trout, rainbow trout and char. In some lakes there are also natural stocks of pike, perch, roach and tench. Family fishing with a guide is organised every Tuesday and Thursday in the summer at Hökensås. In winter, ice fishing is offered in some fishing-card lakes.
First Camp Hökensås is a holiday village and camping site that is open all year round in the Hökensås Nature Conservation Area. At the facility there is a large area for a range of activities such as mini-golf and boules. There is a shop and restaurant and adjacent to the facility there are hiking trails plus cross-country ski trails in winter.
Bathing
Less than a kilometre from First Camp Hökensås lies the lake Lilla Havssjön, the district’s popular bathing lake. It is scenically situated in a wooded landscape and has both a jetty and a diving tower.
Hiking
Adjacent to First Camp Hökensås there are several hiking trails. The trails, which begin and end at the holiday village, are four in number. The southern part of the Västra Vätterleden trail, which stretches from Tiveden in the north down to Mullsjö in the south, goes along Hökensås. The Västra Vätterleden trail is circa 150 km long and divided into eight stages passing through varied countryside.
Falk’s grave
Surrounded by myth, Falk’s grave evokes many feelings. It is said that there are always fresh flowers lying here - Is it true?
The grave is on Svedmon on Hökensås. Buried here is stagecoach robber Jonas Falk. Jonas Falk, in the middle of the 1800s, together with his stepfather Anders Frid, robbed a mail stagecoach which resulted in a robbery-murder. Jonas and Anders were both condemned to death by decapitation. Anders Frid asked for mercy and had his sentence commuted, Jonas however did not ask for mercy and was executed and buried on Svedmon on Hökensås in the year 1855.
